How the Song Key Finder Works

Drop an audio or video file and the tool names its key: the note the song is built around, and whether it is major or minor. It listens to the whole track rather than the first few bars, maps which pitches sound across it, and a neural network decides which of the 24 major and minor keys fits that picture best.

What the Result Shows

The key is written the way a chord chart would write it, such as F♯ minor or B♭ major. When the model gave real weight to a second key, that one is shown as well, on a line beginning with “or”. The tempo of the song is in the box beside it.

How Often It Is Right, and How It Is Wrong

Key detection is not a solved problem, and no tool gets every song. In our test on 836 song excerpts with a known key, this one named exactly the right key for about two songs in three. Most of the misses were a closely related key: the one a fifth away, the relative major or minor that shares the same notes, or the same root in the other mode. About one song in nine came back with a key unrelated to the real one. Songs that change key, and blues and jazz, where the harmony leans on notes outside the scale, are the hard cases.

Check It Against the Second Key

The second key on the result is the practical safeguard. A song in A minor and a song in C major use the same seven notes, and which of the two it “is” can be a matter of opinion even between musicians. If the first answer sounds wrong when you play along, try the second before anything else.

Keys That Mix Well Together

Two songs blend without clashing when their keys share most of their notes. The closest matches for any key are the same key, its relative major or minor (A minor and C major, for example), and the keys a fifth above and below it (for C major: G major and F major). That is what DJs mean by harmonic mixing, and it is why the key is worth knowing before two tracks are layered.

Change the Key Afterwards

Once you know the key, Speed & Pitch can move the song to another one: up to twelve semitones up or down, without changing the tempo. That is how a track is brought into a singer's range or into the key of the song it will be mixed with.

Looking for the Tempo?

The BPM is part of every result here. The BPM Finder page is the same tool with the tempo first, and explains half time, double time and songs whose tempo drifts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drop the audio or video file onto this page. The tool analyzes the whole track in your browser and shows the key and the BPM.

On GTZAN, a standard test set, it named exactly the right key for about 65% of the 836 excerpts that have a key annotation. In roughly a further 22% the answer was a closely related key (a fifth away, the relative key or the parallel key), and in about 11% it was unrelated. That is in line with the best published key detection models; none of them is right every time.

The second key appears when the model found it nearly as likely as the first. It is very often the relative major or minor, which shares all its notes with the first, so both fit the song.

The same key, the relative major or minor (which uses the same notes), and the keys a fifth above or below. For a song in A minor that means C major, E minor and D minor.

No. The file is decoded and analyzed inside your browser. Only the analysis models are downloaded, and you can confirm in your browser's Network tab that no audio is sent.

Yes. There is no account and no watermark, and an analysis does not count against the daily export allowance the editing tools have, because nothing is exported.
