Which Curve Sounds Right?
Linear rises at a constant rate — fine for short utility fades. Equal-power matches how loudness is perceived and is the natural choice for music. Exponential stays quiet longer and swells late, which suits long ambient intros and dramatic outros. When unsure, equal-power is the safe default.
Kill Clicks and Abrupt Endings
A cut that starts or stops mid-waveform produces an audible click. Even a 20–50 ms fade at each end removes it — that's the classic fix for trimmed samples, ringtone endings, and looped clips. For longer material, a 2–4 second fade out is the standard way to end a song that has no natural ending.
