Which Curve Sounds Right?
Linear rises at a constant rate — fine for short utility fades. Equal-power matches how loudness is perceived and is the natural choice for music. Exponential stays quiet longer and swells late, which suits long ambient intros and dramatic outros. When unsure, equal-power is the safe default.
Kill Clicks and Abrupt Endings
A cut that starts or stops mid-waveform produces an audible click. Even a 20–50 ms fade at each end removes it — that's the classic fix for trimmed samples, ringtone endings, and looped clips. For longer material, a 2–4 second fade out is the standard way to end a song that has no natural ending.
Trim First, Fade Second
Fades belong at the ends of the file you are actually keeping, so shorten it before you shape it — a fade out applied first ends up somewhere in the middle once the tail comes off. Cut the file to length in the Trimmer, send the result here from the shared pool, and put the fades on the finished edges. This is also the fix for a join that clicks: trim each piece to a clean edge, fade 20–50 ms, then combine.
